If the cough is caused by external stimuli, don't worry too much
Cough is a common symptom in dogs' life, and cough can also be divided into disease and non-disease.
1. Judging according to the intensity and frequency of coughing
1. Cough intensity
The cough is strong and mostly occurs in the early stage of inflammation or when there is no pain and thick secretions, and it is common in laryngitis and tracheitis.
Weak and weak cough, seen in pneumonia, emphysema, pleurisy, etc.
Cough accompanied by pain is more common in acute laryngitis, laryngeal edema, foreign body pneumonia, etc.
2. Cough frequency
Severe coughing, and the frequency of coughing is high, indicating that the mucous membrane of the respiratory tract is strongly stimulated, which is common in laryngitis, foreign body in the upper respiratory tract, and foreign body pneumonia.
Periodic cough, seen in upper respiratory tract infection, chronic bronchitis, tuberculosis, etc.
The cough is frequent and continuous, and can be transformed into a spastic cough in severe cases, which is seen in acute pharyngitis, bronchitis, and bronchopneumonia.
3. Nature of cough
Dry cough (cough without sputum or with little sputum), seen in acute pharyngitis, early stage of acute bronchitis, pleurisy, mild tuberculosis, etc.
Wet cough (cough accompanied by sputum), seen in chronic bronchitis, pneumonia, bronchiectasis, lung abscess, and cavitary tuberculosis.
2. Coughing state caused by some diseases
1. Cough caused by diseases of respiratory organs
1 Laryngitis: dysphagia, salivation, submandibular lymph node enlargement, dyspnea, local tenderness.
2 Bronchitis: episodic cough, acute dry cough or painful cough, bronchial breath sounds are harsh.
3 Bronchopneumonia: fever, mucus or purulent rhinorrhea, focal rales in the lung area on auscultation, shortness of breath.
4. Pneumonia: high fever, dyspnea, rales on auscultation of lung area, easy fatigue, rust-colored nasal fluid (for lobar pneumonia), hypoxemia.
5 Pulmonary edema: shortness of breath and difficulty, cyanosis, mouth breathing, elevated body temperature, expectoration, sputum is pink foam.
6 Pleurisy: abdominal breathing, accompanied by cough, pain on palpation of the chest wall, rubs on auscultation.
7. Empyema in the thoracic cavity: abdominal breathing, mouth breathing, painful expression, accompanied by cough, elbow abduction, pain on percussion of the chest wall, pus outflow from thoracocentesis.
If it is a cough caused by an infectious disease, it must be treated as soon as possible
2. Cough caused by parasitic diseases
1 Canine filariasis: sick dogs do not like to exercise, ascites, dyspnea, hemoglobinuria, and microfilariae can be found in blood tests.
2 blood-colored esophagocytosis: vomiting, dysphagia, salivation, eggs can be found in the feces.
Type 3 strongyloidiasis: mainly infects dogs and cats, manifested as eczematous dermatitis, salivation, dyspnea and cough, dehydration, exhaustion, larvae and eggs can be found in stool microscopy.
3. Cough due to infectious diseases
1 Canine distemper: bipolar fever, purulent eye mucus, inflammation of the respiratory tract, accompanied by cough and neurological symptoms, which can be determined by immunological kits.
2 Infectious tracheobronchitis (fossa cough): dry cough, mucopurulent nasal discharge, fever.
3 Parainfluenza virus infection: sudden fever, runny nose, cough, virus isolation helps to identify the pathogen.
Since most diseases may cause cough, and the symptoms are similar, if the dog is younger, it is best to send it directly to the hospital for examination, so as not to delay the condition.
